Description

Build accurate, purposeful comma use by teaching students to recognise the grammatical boundaries a comma marks. Commas and Clauses is a complete Year 6 English unit that develops clause knowledge alongside punctuation control, so students learn when a comma is required, when it is optional and when it creates an error.

Across approximately five lessons, the sequence covers independent and dependent clauses, coordinating conjunctions, opening words, phrases and clauses, non-essential embedded clauses, lists, direct address, dialogue and comma splices. The native editable PowerPoint presentation provides explicit instruction, worked examples and guided practice. A clause-boundary sort, four-station codebreaker game and seven focused worksheets then provide collaborative, independent, support and extension opportunities.

The unit concludes with a two-page, 30-mark assessment (15 marks per page) and a detailed rubric. Matching answer pages are included for every closed-response worksheet and both assessment pages. The open writing task includes a self-edit checklist and is assessed with the rubric.

  • Punctuate introductory words, phrases and dependent clauses.

  • Frame non-essential embedded information with a matched pair of commas.

  • Distinguish essential information from extra information.

  • Apply commas accurately in lists, direct address and dialogue.

  • Detect and repair comma splices.

  • Explain punctuation choices and apply them in original writing.

Classroom Use

Use the presentation for whole-class explicit instruction, then select the sorting activity, codebreaker stations and worksheets for guided groups, independent practice, differentiation, homework or revision. The quiz can be used as a formative check before the final assessment. The complete sequence is designed for approximately five lessons across one teaching week.
