Concepts About Print - Foundation

Click here to preview this resource
Concepts About Print - Foundation provides a full week of explicit early literacy teaching. Students learn where reading begins, track print from left to right, use a return sweep, and distinguish letters, words, spaces and punctuation. They identify the front and back cover, title, spine, author, illustrator and blurb, and practise navigating simple digital texts with taps, swipes, scrolling, arrows, buttons and menus.
The unit also connects print awareness with sentence and sound work. Students segment sentences into individual words, orally blend simple sound strings and segment single-syllable words into phonemes. An editable 18-slide presentation supports whole-class instruction, while the editable 22-slide quiz provides 10 interleaved question-and-answer checks.
Colour displays, cut-out pointers, Build-a-Book mats, sorting cards and four lower-case bingo boards support modelling, play and small-group teaching. Twelve black-and-white worksheet pages provide sequenced support and extension. Each meaningful worksheet has a matching answer page with a red ANSWERS label and red responses placed in the student writing spaces. The two-page assessment and five-level rubric support consistent evidence collection.
