Equal Sharing and Grouping Year 1

Click here to preview this resource
Build a secure early understanding of equal sharing and equal grouping with a practical Year 1 unit designed for a full week of teaching. Students learn that sharing starts with a known number of groups and asks how many belong in each group, while grouping starts with a known group size and asks how many groups can be made.
The 17-slide presentation introduces the language and models each strategy with familiar collections. Guided examples show students how to draw groups, deal or place items one at a time, count the result, check that groups are equal and confirm that the original total has been preserved. Students also explore problems with leftovers and explain their thinking with counters, pictures and numbers.
Colour mats, problem cards and two games support hands-on practice. Five worksheet resources provide eight student pages that progress from direct equal shares to grouping, leftovers, strategy choice and explanation. Ten matching answer pages, a two-page Animal Shelter Sharing Day assessment and a five-level rubric support feedback and reporting.
