Description
Turn unfamiliar words into solvable puzzles with this comprehensive Year 6 etymology unit. The editable teaching presentation explains how word histories and meaningful word parts help readers infer meaning. Students learn to distinguish roots and base words, recognise useful Greek and Latin roots, examine how prefixes and suffixes alter meaning, and use sentence context to confirm or revise an inference.
The learning sequence balances teacher modelling with collaborative and independent practice. Three colour reference displays support classroom discussion. Root Family Sort, Affix Adventure and Prefix Bingo make morphology visible and memorable, while five worksheet sequences provide scaffolded, core and extension practice. A 22-slide quiz, two-page assessment and marking rubric support formative and summative checking.
Black-and-white student practice and assessment pages are designed for economical printing and generous written responses. Matching answer pages place red answers directly in the student response spaces. Colour displays and game materials are suitable for whole-class teaching, literacy rotations, small groups, intervention and extension.
