Less Familiar Words — Year 5

Click here to preview this resource
Give Year 5 students a reliable process for tackling words that do not yield to a single sound rule. This unit teaches students to notice a familiar letter pattern, test plausible sounds, connect sentence meaning and known word parts, then verify the result.
Students investigate flexible pronunciation and spelling choices for ch, ea, ei, ou, ough and our. Explicit teaching is paired with visual reference material, two contrasting board games, a hands-on sorting lab, differentiated worksheet practice, contextual reading, morphology, spelling correction and independent transfer.
The editable 22-slide presentation provides a coherent teaching sequence with worked examples. The editable 22-slide quiz offers 10 mixed-format questions in question-and-answer pairs. A two-page assessment, matching answer pages and five-level rubric make it straightforward to check understanding and plan follow-up teaching.
