Full Description

Teach line and rotational symmetry through a carefully sequenced week of explicit instruction, practical exploration, independent practice and assessment. Students learn to use the fold test, identify and draw lines of symmetry, distinguish line symmetry from rotational symmetry, determine rotational order and smallest angle, and explain which properties remain invariant after reflections and rotations.

The editable 17-slide presentation establishes the key vocabulary and concepts. A colour Symmetry at a Glance display supports classroom reference, while the Symmetry Sort Lab and Turn-and-Match Challenge create meaningful discussion and hands-on practice. Five two-page worksheet sets provide substantial application and reasoning, each followed immediately by matching teacher answers. A design brief and two-page assessment allow students to apply their knowledge in a new context, supported by worked answers and a detailed rubric.

The editable 22-slide quiz includes 10 questions with a matching answer slide after every question. It can be used for whole-class review, formative assessment or a lesson warm-up across several sessions.

Learning Focus

  • Lines of symmetry and the fold test

  • Rotational symmetry, order and smallest angle

  • Regular, irregular and everyday shapes

  • Line only, rotational only, both and neither classifications

  • Reflections and rotations as transformations

  • Properties that change and properties that remain invariant

  • Geometric explanation using line, centre, order and angle

Classroom Use

Use the presentation for explicit teaching, the display for ongoing reference, the sorting lab and game for partner or small-group practice, and the worksheets for guided, independent or homework tasks. The quiz supports formative review. Finish with the design brief or the two-page assessment and rubric. The complete sequence is suitable for approximately five lessons and can be extended with the game, design and reasoning pages.
