Odd & Even Numbers Year 4 Unit

Click here to preview this resource
Odd & Even Numbers is a complete Year 4 teaching unit for classifying whole numbers and reasoning about parity. Students use ones digits and equal pairs to identify odd and even numbers, then investigate what happens when odd and even values are added, subtracted and multiplied.
The sequence moves from explicit teaching and visual models to sorting, game-based discussion, calculation predictions, error analysis, missing-number reasoning and assessment. Division is handled carefully so students learn to check whether a quotient is a whole number before attempting a parity classification.
The editable 20-slide presentation supports whole-class teaching, worked examples and discussion. The editable 22-slide quiz uses 10 alternating question-and-answer pairs across multiple-choice, true/false and short-answer formats. A 40-page Unit Plan PDF provides a colour display, a five-page sorting activity, two replayable games, six differentiated two-page worksheets with matching answers, a two-page assessment with answers and a landscape rubric.

Learning Focus
Identify odd and even whole numbers from the ones digit
Explain parity using equal pairs and remainders
Predict and verify parity in addition and subtraction
Apply multiplication parity properties
Recognise when division does not produce a whole number
Solve missing-number and consecutive-number claims
Explain, justify and generalise parity patterns
Classroom Use
Use the presentation for explicit teaching and worked examples, then consolidate learning with the Parity Sorting Lab, Parity Path and Card Flip Parity Battle. The six two-page worksheets provide sequenced core practice, reasoning, error analysis and extension. Finish with the two-page assessment and use the rubric for consistent feedback.
