About this unit

The Position and Location Foundation Unit gives teachers a coherent five-lesson sequence for early spatial learning. Students use familiar language to describe where objects are, identify left and right, match pictures to positional words, follow one-step and multi-step directions, and trace simple routes through classroom, playground, animal and park contexts.

The editable presentation supports explicit instruction and discussion, while the editable quiz provides 10 question-and-answer pairs for review. Two colourful displays reinforce vocabulary. Two multi-page games support oral language and collaborative practice. Six worksheet titles provide supported, core and independent practice, with eight matching worksheet answer pages. A two-page assessment, two assessment answer pages and an A4 landscape five-level rubric complete the unit.

  • Identify and apply left and right.

  • Listen to, give and follow one-step and multi-step directions.

  • Interpret spatial clues and simple routes.

Classroom use

Use the presentation for daily explicit teaching and modelling, then select games for partner or small-group practice. The support and core worksheet pages allow teachers to adjust the amount of visual prompting and independence. The Classroom Position Hunt provides movement-based application. Finish with the editable quiz for whole-class review and the two-page assessment with rubric for evidence of learning. The sequence suits approximately one school week, with additional pages available for revision, centres or intervention.
