Predicting Reading Strategy – Year 5

Click here to preview this resource
Inside this Year 5 predicting unit, teachers receive a 30-page unit plan, a 22-slide editable presentation, a 22-slide editable quiz, classroom visuals, collaborative practice, printable worksheets, matching answers, an assessment and a marking rubric.
The sequence teaches students to preview titles, images, headings, captions and structure; distinguish literal clues from inferred clues; combine evidence with relevant prior knowledge; pause at useful points; and explain why a prediction is plausible. Students then learn to confirm, sharpen or contradict their thinking when new information appears.
Fiction and non-fiction tasks support transfer across text types. Picture Clue Lab gives students visual evidence to discuss, while Prediction Paths turns repeated reasoning practice into a collaborative board game. The final Midnight Garden Mystery assessment checks independent application of the whole strategy.
