Repetition and Word Associations – Year 6

Description
Repetition and Word Associations is a complete Year 6 English unit for teaching cohesion as a set of deliberate writer choices. Students learn how purposeful repetition maintains continuity or creates emphasis, how word associations and lexical chains keep a topic active, and how synonyms, antonyms, general terms and linking language clarify relationships between ideas.
The teaching sequence begins with visual references and native editable PowerPoint instruction. Students then sort and connect vocabulary, play a collaborative cohesion game, analyse short passages, repair weak paragraphs and create original cohesive writing. Multi-page worksheets provide enough room for careful reading, annotation, revision and justification rather than reducing the skill to isolated sentences.
Closed-response practice and the assessment include matching answer pages with red answers placed in the original response spaces. The final two-page assessment checks analysis and application, while the five-level rubric describes progress in identifying devices, explaining reader effect, using repetition, building lexical chains, and revising and justifying cohesion.
