Segmenting Sensation – Year 1

Segmenting Sensation is a complete Year 1 English unit for explicit phoneme-segmentation teaching and practice. The sequence helps students move from oral sound work to accurate phoneme mapping and spelling through a consistent five-step routine: say the word, stretch it, tap each sound, map the phonemes and write the word.
The editable presentation introduces the concepts and models two- to six-phoneme words, consonant blends, digraphs, vowel teams and two-syllable words. Colour cards, mats and games provide supported whole-class, small-group and literacy-centre practice. Five low-ink worksheets then build independent fluency before students complete a two-part assessment and marking rubric.
Eight matching answer pages place red answers directly in the student response spaces. Teachers can use the full sequence across approximately five literacy sessions or select individual games, worksheets and assessment pages for intervention, revision and ongoing monitoring.
