Year 1 Addition Strategies Unit

Build confident, flexible addition thinking with a complete week of explicit teaching, hands-on games, differentiated practice and assessment.
Strategies for Addition supports Year 1 students to add within 20 using several connected strategies. Students learn to begin with the larger addend and count on, swap addends to simplify a calculation, make and bridge through 10, use doubles and near doubles, partition wholes, and select a strategy that fits the numbers.
The editable 18-slide presentation provides a clear teaching sequence with worked examples and guided practice. Three colourful games turn the key strategies into repeatable maths rotations. Five worksheet resources provide nine student practice pages, each with a matching answer page, followed by a two-page assessment and five-level rubric. The editable 22-slide quiz includes 10 question-and-answer pairs for whole-class review or checking understanding.
