Year 1 Duration Unit

Teach students to compare, sequence and describe duration through familiar Year 1 contexts. What is the Duration? combines explicit teaching, class discussion, practical sorting and sequencing, independent worksheet practice, assessment and review in one coherent unit.

The editable 19-slide presentation introduces duration through everyday events and builds understanding from seconds to years. Two colour reference displays provide classroom anchors. Students use a duration sort mat and cards, sequence familiar routines, compare which events take longer, and choose sensible time units.

Six print-friendly worksheet topics provide structured practice across event comparison, unit selection, calendar relationships and explanation. A two-page school-fair assessment brings the learning together, with matching answer pages and a marking rubric. The editable 22-slide quiz contains 10 question-and-answer pairs for whole-class review or formative assessment.

The unit is designed for approximately one school week and can also be used for intervention, revision, maths rotations or targeted small-group work.
