Year 1 Modelling Money Problems Unit

Click here to preview this resource
Modelling Money Problems gives Year 1 teachers a sequenced week of lessons focused on fair sharing and equal grouping. Students read a money story, build or draw the shares or groups, count accurately, record their thinking and check that equal groups match.
The unit begins with explicit teaching and a clear Share or Group? routine. Students then apply the strategy through toy-shop mats, the Coin Cafe Grouping Race, task cards, think-board work and differentiated printable practice. A two-page School Fair Money Challenge and matching rubric support evidence collection at the end of the sequence.
Colour display, activity and game pages are ready for classroom use. Worksheet, assessment and rubric pages are black and white for economical printing. Meaningful student pages have corresponding answer versions that reproduce the same layout with red ANSWERS labelling and red worked responses.

CLASSROOM USE
Use the presentation for five explicit-teaching and guided-practice lessons. Follow with the Toy Shop and Coin Cafe resources in whole-class, small-group or maths-centre rotations. Assign the worksheets for supported, core and extended practice, then use the School Fair Money Challenge and rubric for assessment evidence. The editable quiz works well as a whole-class review or end-of-unit check.
