Year 1 Reading Expectations Unit

Click here to preview this resource
Reading Expectations is a classroom-ready Year 1 English unit that helps students develop the routines and strategies needed for purposeful independent reading.
Students learn how to prepare a calm reading space, choose a just-right book, care for classroom books, recognise purposeful reading behaviours, use word-solving strategies, check that a sentence makes sense, reread and self-correct, read in meaningful phrases and build stamina in manageable steps.
The unit supports experiences with teacher-selected decodable texts that reflect taught sound-letter patterns and authentic classroom texts used for vocabulary, ideas, enjoyment and meaning. Colour displays, a behaviour sort, a book-care game and class-library labels support explicit teaching and discussion. Print-friendly worksheets, a two-page assessment, matching answers and a five-level rubric support practice and evidence collection.
