Year 3 Decoding Unknown Words Unit

Click here to preview this resource
Give Year 3 readers a clear routine for working through unfamiliar words. This unit explicitly teaches students to look for graphemes, blend from left to right, split longer words into syllables and meaningful parts, and use prefixes and suffixes. Students then read on or reread to confirm the word with grammar and meaning, trying another pronunciation when the first attempt does not fit.
The editable teaching presentation, 10-question quiz, colour display, board game and card sort support whole-class and small-group instruction. Six black-and-white worksheets move from guided pattern recognition to independent decoding and self-correction. A final checkpoint assessment, seven matching red-answer pages and a five-point rubric support marking and feedback.
