Year 4 Spelling Rules Unit

Click here to preview this resource
Teach spelling as a connected system of meaningful word parts and dependable spelling rules. This complete Year 4 unit begins with morphemes, base words and roots, then explores how common prefixes and suffixes change meaning and grammatical role.
Students apply plural endings and the spelling actions needed when adding suffixes: adding directly, dropping a final e before a vowel suffix, keeping a final e before a consonant suffix, changing consonant + y to i, keeping y before -ing, and doubling a final consonant when the sound and stress pattern require it.
The editable presentation provides a structured teaching sequence, while the editable 10-question quiz gives immediate answer and feedback slides. Colour games, cards and sorting tasks add collaborative practice. Six student worksheet pages develop recognition, word building, explanation and editing skills, each with a matching answer page. A two-page assessment, two assessment answer pages and a five-level rubric support clear end-of-unit evidence.
