Year 4 Surveys and Statistical Investigations Unit

Click here to preview this resource
Build confident statistical thinkers with a coherent Year 4 unit that takes students through the complete investigation cycle. Students learn to plan focused and fair survey questions, identify suitable participants and collection methods, collect categorical data, record tallies and frequencies, use digital tools where appropriate, choose and construct effective displays, compare distributions, describe shape and variation, and communicate conclusions supported by evidence.
The sequence combines explicit teaching with movement, sorting, collaborative discussion and sustained investigation practice. Question Quest develops judgement about survey-question quality. Human Survey Graph Lab turns class responses into a large physical display. Writing Strong Survey Questions provides support and extension practice. Park Picnic Survey, Club Ratings and Sports Equipment Survey ask students to interpret increasingly rich data displays, while Cupcake Creator applies survey evidence to a practical design decision.
The three-page School Celebration Survey Investigation assesses planning, collection, display, interpretation and communication. A five-level, 25-mark rubric supports consistent marking. Meaningful closed-response tasks include matching answer pages that preserve the student layout and show the ANSWERS label and responses in red.

Learning Focus
Plan focused, measurable and answerable survey questions.
Identify bias, unclear wording and overlapping response options.
Select participants and practical collection methods.
Collect and record categorical data using tallies and frequency tables.
Use digital tools, including spreadsheets, where appropriate.
Select, construct and evaluate column graphs and dot plots.
Describe and compare distribution shape and variation.
Interpret evidence and communicate conclusions in context.
Classroom Use
Use the editable presentation for explicit teaching and modelling, then select the hands-on activities and investigations for whole-class, small-group or independent practice. The differentiated worksheets support consolidation and extension. Finish with the School Celebration Survey Investigation as an individual or paired assessment, using the supplied rubric for feedback and marking.
