About this unit

Teach Year 5 students to connect metric prefixes and common relationships across length, mass and capacity, then apply those relationships when estimating, measuring, converting and recording. The sequence explicitly develops the choice of attribute, unit and instrument, and asks students to explain when a smaller or combined unit makes a record more accurate and useful.

The pack combines a native editable PowerPoint lesson sequence and quiz with colour classroom displays, sorting cards, matching cards, practical measurement stations and black-and-white written practice. Four two-page worksheet sets progress from metric-prefix patterns to accuracy, mixed measures and applied measurement decisions. Matching red answer pages sit immediately after the student pages. A two-page, 20-mark assessment and five-level Measurement Mastery Rubric support end-of-unit evidence and feedback.

  • Measurement Mastery Rubric — Beginning, Developing, Achieving, Confident and Exceeding

Learning focus

  • Recognise relationships between common metric prefixes and units

  • Select sensible units and measuring instruments for length, mass and capacity

  • Convert and compare whole, decimal and mixed measurement records

  • Use smaller or combined units when added detail improves accuracy

  • Estimate, measure, record, check and justify practical decisions

Classroom use

Use the presentation for explicit teaching and guided discussion, then select the display and activity pages for modelling, centres or collaborative work. The four worksheet sets provide support, core practice and application across a week. Use the editable quiz for formative review and the assessment/rubric pair for end-of-sequence evidence. The complete sequence is designed for approximately five lessons and can also be split across revision or intervention sessions.
