About this unit
The Year 5 Strategic Spelling Unit gives students a practical, evidence-based routine for spelling unfamiliar words. Across a week of explicit instruction and guided practice, students learn to say and listen to a word, break it into meaningful parts, connect spelling with meaning and word history, check the pattern, and verify uncertain spellings.
The editable presentation introduces prefixes, base words, bound roots, suffixes and word families before exploring -able and -ible endings, common spellings for the /shun/ sound, spelling changes in derived words, less common plurals and word origins. Colour displays, cut-apart morphology cards and the Affix Expedition game make the concepts visible and interactive. Nine student worksheet pages provide substantial independent practice, while 11 matching red-answer pages support efficient marking. A two-page, 30-mark investigation and a five-level rubric provide a clear assessment pathway.
